By Jacquelyn Smith

Think there's no such thing as a high-paying, low-stress job?

Think again.

The stress tolerance for each job is a rating on a scale from zero to 100, where a lower rating signals less stress. It measures how frequently workers must accept criticism and deal effectively with high stress on the job. The data was gathered from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Occupational Information Network (O*NET).

1. Material Scientist

1/19

Stress tolerance: 53.0
Average annual salary: $94,350
What they do: Research and study substances at the atomic and molecular levels and the ways in which substances react with each other; use knowledge to develop new and improved products.
Education requirements: At least a bachelor’s degree; master’s degree or Ph.D. is needed for many research jobs.
Stress tolerance is measured by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Occupational Information Network, with lower scores indicating less stress on the job.

2. Food Scientist

2/19

Stress tolerance: 55.8
Average annual salary: $66,870
What they do: Ensure that agricultural establishments are productive and food is safe.
Education requirements: At least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited postsecondary institution; many get a doctoral degree.
Stress tolerance is measured by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Occupational Information Network, with lower scores indicating less stress on the job.

Average annual salary: $104,350

10 Unhappiest Jobs In America

These occupations rank lowest for job satisfaction

Any time you rank jobs to find the top, you've also created the list of the ones that come in at the bottom. In this case, CareerBliss also put together the list of the 10 unhappiest jobs in the country. The site tossed outlying positions and looked only at job titles with at least 20 reviews. Here are the ten winners - uh, losers ... oh, whatever - ranked from least unhappy to most.

Think of what you might have gone through in any of these jobs - or maybe what you've seen people in such positions put through - and you can see why they'd end up on the unhappiest list.

$80K Plus A Year? The Data Sector Is Where The Dollars Are

Dozens of job types and millions of positions pay $40 an hour or more, but many don't have the word data in the title.

The key is that the occupations lean heavily on three activities, according to the report:
  • "Analyzing data or information: identifying the underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information by breaking down information or data into separate parts."
  • "Processing information: compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying information or data."
  • "Interacting with computers: using computers and computer systems (including hardware and software) to program, write software, set up functions, enter data, or process information."
The Department of Commerce says there were 10.3 million individual jobs in 2013 that met the criteria. Workers need to understand data (which can mean a lot more than numbers) and know, or be able to learn, how to make use of it with computers. Here are ten examples of what the department counted as top data occupations, along with their average hourly wage from 2013:

These 11 Jobs Only Pay What?

Some jobs that you might consider critical, or that seem high profile, pay a lot less than you might think.

'Jane Doe's paycheck is too small. Can illustrate poverty, unfair labor practices, or gender based pay inequity.'

Fast food workers, maids, retail clerks, telemarketers, construction helpers, waiters: There are jobs that most people don't expect to necessarily pay well. The Bureau of Labor Statistics keeps a list of the average annual wage for hundreds of different occupations.

But amidst the listings are occupations whose average income might surprise you. These are jobs that have great responsibility, or are strongly in the public eye, or might even be seemingly important in the technology industry. That doesn't mean they're top of the list when it comes to handing out paychecks. Forbes put together a list of "surprisingly low-paying jobs." They combed through the most recent BLS table of occupations and looked for jobs that they were surprised made less than $50,000 a year.

We looked at their list and made some changes based on using average wage data rather than median. Here are some of the surprisingly poorly-paying jobs people have in the U.S. For each we list the BLS job description and the average annual pay.

10 Happiest Jobs In America

Job satisfaction, not salary, is the key.

Want to be happy at work? Find a satisfying job. Human resource executives have known for years that there's a lot more to keeping workers happy than a large paycheck. It might include a feeling of usefulness, flexibility, exciting surroundings, challenges, and an emotional bond with the other people at the office.

What's satisfying, leading to happiness, can vary widely. Job site CareerBliss has pulled together data from tens of thousands of user reviews, according to USA Today. The reviewers ranked their job satisfaction on seven different factors: the boss, coworkers, support, rewards, growth opportunities, corporate culture, and the nature of daily work. CareerBliss put together the top ten positions for satisfaction, making them the official happiest jobs.

CareerBliss tossed the outlying positions -- Fortune 500 CEO and rock stars need not apply, for example -- and looked only at job titles with at least 20 reviews, so some more obscure job types that might be delightful could have been overlooked. Here are the ten winners, from top to bottom:

  1. School principal
  2. Executive chef
  3. Loan officer
  4. Automation engineer
  5. Research assistant
  6. Database administrator
  7. Website developer
  8. Business development executive
  9. Senior software engineer
  10. Systems developer

It's a tech-heavy selection, which may have to do with the mix of users that CareerBliss gets. And there's also some luck of the draw, depending on what data they look at. Here's the CareerBliss happiest jobs for 2014:
  1. Database administrator
  2. QA engineer
  3. Executive recruiter
  4. Underwriter
  5. Executive assistant
  6. Software developer
  7. Designer
  8. Program manager
  9. Engineer
  10. Administrative assistant

Not a lot of consistency. According to a University of Chicago study from 2007, the top positions in job satisfaction leaned toward occupations that largely involved helping others or being creative:
  1. Clergy
  2. Physical therapists
  3. Firefighters
  4. Education administrators
  5. Painters, sculptors, related
  6. Teachers
  7. Authors
  8. Psychologists
  9. Special education teachers
  10. Operating engineers

Apparently timing, and the people you talk to, are important. According to those researchers, "job satisfaction increases with the prestige or social standing of occupations."

But the big factor, according to research in a publication of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, is the economy:
However, in a statistical model comparing all significant variables, the GDP-measuring a country's overall economic output-was the single best predictor of workers' job satisfaction. The GDP was the top predictor even compared to the strongest individual-level factors: workers' career advancement perspectives and depressive symptom scores.
So if things seem down at work, there's hope. As the economy continues to improve, things might begin to look cheerier.
